Each and every Heckler and Koch knife is built by Benchmade. The spring assisted H&K P30 is no exception. A suprisingly good value at just under $40.00, this knife is perfect as an everyday carry utility knife. The handle scales are black molded thermoplastic. Thermoplastic, also known as thermosoftening plastic, is a polymer that above certain temperatures becomes pliable. When it cools, it goes back to a solid state. So essentially, the handles are a hard polymer. They have plenty of texturing that makes for a non slip grip. In my hand, the nearly 4" handle feels just right. There is a slight finger groove where your forefinger sits and just a bit of jimping on the spine of the blade. The tip down pocket clip is set high enough on the handle that it doesn't interfere with my grip at all. The blade opens quick and smooth with just a bit of pressure on the thumb stud. Benchmade calls the spring assist system the Optimiser, and currently it is used just on the P30 series of knives. The knife is set up for right hand users and doesn't switch for lefties. The modified drop point blade, some are calling it a clip point blade, is 8CR13 stainless steel with a black finish. The P30 is amazingly light--it only weighs 2.2 ounces.
