SOG Mini Aegis Assist Knife Review
Immediately upon grabbing the SOG Mini Aegis AE-21 in your hand you notice two things. First, it is incredibly light in the hand. Second, it has all the hallmarks of a great carry knife. Named for the Greek word meaning shield or protection, this knife is certain to give you everything you need in a daily carry knife
BLADE
The 3.00 classic shaped clip point blade has a flat grind with secondary bevel. The AUS8 stainless steel blade has a satin finish. In the closed position, the blade stays locked in place with a small toggle switch on the front handle scale. The safety is red/ready to go meaning when it shows redthe blade is ready to open. When in the active position, you just give either of the thumb studs a flick with your knife and the S.A.T. assist mechanism gets the blade out in a real hurry.
SOG Assisted Technology, S.A.T., works by balancing opposing high tension coil springs. When you start the blade open, the force of your blade start overwhelms the opposing tension keeping the blade closed. The spring then snaps the blade open. S.A.T. is one of the fast assist systems on the market. It is also very reliable.
Back to the blade, the clip point blade is perfect for slicing, chopping as well as piercing cuts. The AUS-8 stainless steel is easy to maintain, gives you good corrosion resistance as well as good strength. It is also easy to sharpen, when the time comes.
To close the blade, there is a slide release on the front handle scale. When the blade opens, it locks into position at the front of the groove. To release the blade, you just pull this slide release back and the blade unlocksall ready for you to close it manually. I really like the flat grind blade for the excellent cutting properties it offers.
HANDLE
The 4.10 Glass Reinforced Nylon (GRN) handle is all black and has a checkered DigiGrip pattern that gives your hand plenty of grip. The spine of the handle has split jimping (jimpin just on the edges or corners of the handle not all the way through the middle section) both at the front and butt. The jimping isnt aggressive at all, instead it is just tiny slots machined into the handle. Because the handle is GRN, it keeps the knife weight extremely low. It only weights 2 ounces. Almost unbelievable. An extra wide and somewhat shallow finger groove gives room for both your forefinger and middle finger. There is some scalloping on these edges for even more grip security. At the butt of the handle sits the classic deep carry trademark bayonet reversible clip. This is a fantastic clip that truly allows you discreet carry.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
If you are looking for an assist knife that doesnt take up much Pocket Real Estate, the SOG Mini Aegis is certain to fit the bill. It is so lightweight, you wont notice it in your pocket.
