Brous Blades Mini Division Flipper Knife — Quick Review

Brous Blades Mini Division
Brous Blades Mini Division Flipper knife with a satin finish.

Jason Brous makes superlative knives.  The newest addition to his line is the Mini Division Flipper.  When they arrived here at BladeOps, we of course had to hold them and see how they feel.  One of the guys said, “If I buy a flipper in the next few months, this is the one I want.”  I told him he better move fast because if he waits too long, they will all be gone.

The Mini Division is a mid size flipper that measures 8.3″ long when open.  The name doesn’t come from a diminutive size–rather it comes from the fact that it is about 1.5″ smaller than the Division.  The classic drop point D2 steel blade comes in a variety of blade finishes.  The handle is contoured G10.  And the whole thing screams excellence.

The high hollow ground blade will excel at slicing cuts.  D2 has extremely high resistance to elements as well as stain resistance.  Done properly, D2 will require very minimal maintenance.  Occasional light oiling should be plenty.  The greatest strength of D2 is its ability to cut through harder materials and keep an edge longer.  The weaknesses of D2 are its ability to do heavy chopping or high impact cuts as well as an inability to handle lateral pressures.  This means don’t use the knife to chop or to pry.  Since this knife is obviously not built for chopping or prying–neither of those things should be an issue.  The D2 blade on the Mini Division is going to cut and slice with the best of them–and it will keep an edge for an unbelievably long time.  The blade glides open with a smooth tug on the flipper.  Make it open even faster by flicking your wrist at the same time.  It locks up nice and solid with a chamfered liner lock.  The chamfer removes that sharp edge that can sometimes irritate, scratch and bother on some liner locks.

The Mini Division handle is black G-10 scales on skeletonized liners.  Contoured in all the right places, my favorite part of the handle is the modified finger groove that stretches over the first half (closest to the blade) of the handle.  My forefinger and middle finger nestle into place and get loads of additional grip from sitting between the flipper turned blade guard and the handle curve.  This gives me all kinds of power and grip on pull cuts as well as on thrust cuts.  Heavy jimping runs down the last third of the handle and offers even more purchase for my pinkie finger.

Top all this off with a great deep carry pocket clip and you have a high class, sophisticated every day carry knife that has the kind of attention to detail you demand out of a top flight flipper knife.  Each one carries the serial number engraved on the spine of the blade along with Brous Blades.  Find your favorite Mini Division at BladeOps or any of our other great Brous Blades.
