Schrade Viper OTF Assist Knives — Quick Review

Posted by admin on Feb 4th 2014

Schrade Viper OTF Knife
Schrade Viper OTF Knife, model SCHOTF5B

Schrade just released their newest Viper OTF Assist knives.  That’s right–an Out the Front knife that is assisted opening.  The way these knives work is they have a slide “trigger” on the side of the handle.  You start the process by pushing the slide up towards the top of the handle.  After getting it about 25% of the way, the spring mechanism takes over and finishes opening the blade to the fully open position.  Single action knives, these knives close by pulling a small lock mechanism near the top of the handle which releases the blade from the locked open position and allows you to manually close the knife.

The two new models from Schrade Knives are the 4 and the 5 series.  The 4 series are both combo edge bayonet blades, one with a satin finish the other with a black tactical finish.  The 5 series is the same except both blades are standard edge bayonet blades.  A tombstone style black anodized aluminum handle with a classic dimple pattern gives your hand a nice, secure grip on these knives.  They all have deep carry pocket clips and glass breakers at the base of the handle.  If you love Out the Front knives but would prefer an assist model instead of an automatic model, check out the great new Schrade Viper OTF knives.
