Description
The Boker Kalashnikov automatic knife is one of the most popular side open automatics on the market today considering the price point. This knife, as well as the rest of the Kalashnikov auto family, is referred to an auto-conversion knife which means the knife is produced as a folder knife and then converted via third party to offer the automatic function. The Kalashnikov features an aluminum handle scale with integrated finger grooves for a comfortable ergonomic experience and the AUS-8 blade material offers better edge retention than you would expect. This particular model features a black handle with black hardware and a drop point blade in a black finish. Finally, the deep carry pocket clip is designed for tip up carry only.

History of the Kalashnikov

The Boker Kalashnikov Knife Line is named after the famous Russian Lieutenant General Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47. The AK-47 is manufactured in such a way that the parts fit more tight together which results in less play and space between the moving parts for a more accurate and effective weapon. Likewise, the Kalashnikov 47 is assembled in a way that allows the firing of the blade to be smooth and free of blade-play. The Kalashnikov 47 is also modeled after the AK-47 aesthetically with its handle grooves, finger grips, and textured surface. And to top it all off, the Kalashnikov Knife Line comes packaged in a box that is shaped like an AK-47 magazine. This knife is a perfect addition to any collection of knives or for everyday carry.

Customers Speak Up

The Kalashnikov 74 is one of the best-selling knives here at BladeOps. This is simply because of how the users feel about it. When it comes to what customers say about the knife, there is nothing but good reviews about it. Below are some actual reviews that BladeOps customers have said about the Kalashnikov.

Reviewer Bobby H. from TX, United States titled his review Great all around! Of the knife he said,

“The Boker Kalashnikov 74 is by far one of the most reliable knives I've seen. Right out of the box it’s ready to go and has never let me down. All metal construction ensures a rugged knife that can take almost anything. This knife is one of the best and all for under $50.”

It seems as if he were quite impressed with the quality of the knife. Another review by Jason W. from IL, United States says something quite similar. He started his review with this heading, WOW what a great knife. He said about the Kalashnikov 74,

“Just the look and feel of this knife alone will make you fall in love with it. It comes very sharp from the factory and its construction is very solid. It’s easy to open and it’s easy to hold. The only thing I had a slight problem with was the safety lock. It was a little difficult to move it from lock to unlock, otherwise, this knife is flawless.”

This honest review shows that while no knife is absolutely perfect, the Kalashnikov comes pretty close to it. The last review to share here comes from a reviewer who goes by “T” from FL, United States. Of the knife, they headed their review with Very Nice. Their review said,

“I will always buy knives from BladeOps. Sure you can save a couple bucks at other sites, but you don't get the amazing service BladeOps provide. I got my Boker Kal74 two days from when I ordered it!!! It is a very nice knife. It snaps out very very fast and locks up tight. I did have to adjust the blade screw to get rid of the little bit of play in the blade. It makes a nice sound when it locks up. The spring is extremely strong and should last a lifetime. I am very happy with this knife.”

Again, another satisfied customer. These knives are of great quality. Each of these reviews, and others that have been shared on the website gave the Kalashnikov 74 a 5 Star rating.

What helps this knife be a more effective and inexpensive knife is the steel that is put into it. The steel that is used is AUS-8 Stainless Steel that is made in Japan. AUS-8 is said to be compared to steels such as 440C, Cm-154, and D2. This steel is exceptionally hard and is quite capable of achieving and retaining a sharp edge. This well-rounded knife has high quality in its hardness, toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance. While this metal is still far from being perfect, it is a quality steel for what it costs to produce.

Drop Point

One thing that is important is to point out the blade style on the Kalashnikov 74 BK. Too often people may forget why a drop point is an effective blade style and one of the most popular blade styles that are available to choose from. The drop point is an all-purpose blade that is able to stand up to anything that it comes across. The large edge for cutting makes it perfect for slicing. Another advantage that the drop point has is its tip. The point on the blade is sharp and is thicker than other styles, thus allowing for a stronger tip. The point is also great when it comes to controlling the blade. Accuracy is key, especially when it comes to fine tune cutting. The drop point is an all-around good blade to have on a knife.

This knife was purchased to replace a 1st production run Boker Kalashnikov I have had for many years. The original knife has a safety switch which, while still functioning, has begun to give a little trouble. The new knife arrived quickly and on inspection functions well. The opening snap is not quite as powerful on the new knife as on the original, but is still strong. There is no safety on the new knife, but the actuation button is more recessed on the new knife than on my original making accidental opening less likely. I have not put the new knife into service yet, but years of use on the original, I expect it will be of the same quality.
