Smith and Wesson Small Black Ops Assist Knife
Smith and Wesson makes fantastic spring assist knives. The Black Ops series is no exception. And now you can get the Black Ops knives in a smaller version. With a blade of 2.5" and a closed length of 3.375", this knife is the perfect size for every day carry (EDC).
BLADE
The 2.5" blade features a drop point edge and partial serrations. The spine has serious jimping so you can choke up on the blade when you need maximum control. The hollow grind blade makes it great for heavy cutting and for cutting hard materials. Relatively easy to sharpen, the 4034 stainless steel will keep an edge and because it isn't an aggressive hollow grind, the blade grind shouldn't affect the time between sharpening adversely. The blade stays open via an above average liner lock.
HANDLE
The composite handle features unique shaping and patterning that add to the visual appeal as well as providing extra "gripability". Two long finger grooves give your hand a solid grip and the small offset on the spine of the handle, about half way down, gives you an even better grip on this little knife. I like the way this feels in my hand, and I also like the way the front finger groove (one closest to blade) flares out and provides a bit of protection from a hand slip.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
SAFETY AND ASSIST
The knife has a slide safety about mid handle. I do wish the slide safety was just a touch closer to the blade, but it isn't distracting or difficult to reach. Just a preference. The safety is very effective--no matter how much I have tried, I can't get the blade to open without the safety being released. The blade snaps open fast by flicking the thumb stud. Easy to push and very fast open speed. Lock up is great. I really like the MAGIC system by Smith and Wesson. I have carried at least three knives with this spring assist system now and have never had a problem with it--I think it is one of the better mechanisms on the market at this price point.
OVERALL IMPRESSION
Love the knife, love the spring assist mechanism and I think the handle is great. Overall I rate this knife a 9 out of 10. You can also get it with a tanto plain edge blade here.
